What you mean by colloquial is that the grammar is indeed the same so we can understand the basic structure of a sentence but majority of the vocabulary and sayings like proverbs etc are remarkably different.Urdu speakers can control the level of their speech based on whom they are speaking to i.e. they are well aware of words which Hindi speakers don't understand and will avoid using those.
